"I am a strong and independent woman but I need...", "I am a strong and independent woman but I still need someone to...". These lines are all over the internet. People have been caught with this trend that sometimes they forget the real essence of the words strong and independent. But what really is the meaning of these words? Do this generation realize how big of an influence these word contain?
Starting from the very bottom, our country: the Philippines, was a free country. Filipinos would roam around and gather foods freely from the the natural resources which we are rich with. Until one day, Spaniards came and colonized the whole country. Many Filipinos became slaves forcefully serving those who came barging within the boarders of the small islands the country has. Many were killed. They've chose to to stay quiet and let their humanity be harmed by the colonizers. Generations have passed by, but still, no one dared to interfere. Dr. Jose Rizal was the first Filo who dared to fight back. Not with sharp-edged swords and powerful guns but with ink and feathers. He wrote a book that stated every little detail of how inhuman Spaniards were. The colonizers saw plain disrespect in his works that later they killed him. The writings he did triggered the courage of some Filipinos led by Andres Bonifacio formed KKK start a revolution which he successfully ended. Many lives were slaved but amidst all of those, still it was all worth it. Their efforts all payed-off. Twelfth of June year 1898, the Philippine flag was raised, a start of new life for all Filipinos, free from the hands of cruelty and harshness.
The words strong and independent are powerful words. They hold a huge part of the Philippine history. Even these words cannot reach the peak of the sacrificed sweat, tears, and blood. The colonizers lose.Let's be thankful and grateful for them. We wouldn't be where we are right now, if not because of them.
